Four Easy Things You Can To Each Day To Improve Your Quality of Life
Four Easy Things You Can To Each Day To Improve Your Quality of Life
Workout
When reading a blog by the owner of a gym you likely think its self-promoting to tell someone that working out will improve their overall quality of life, but there is science that supports this statement- I PROMISE!
Studies have shown that if you workout for just 20 minutes a day, you will release enough endorphins to improve your mood as well as strengthen your heart, muscles and bones (if you lift weights!) Twenty minutes of exercise also helps reduce the body's inflammatory response, reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, helps to improve metabolism and promotes overall weight loss.
So, if you are looking for a simple way to improve your overall quality of life, in the morning before work, on your lunch break or at the end of your day, push yourself to take a 20 minute walk around the neighborhood. Gradually, this can lead to a 20 minute run, or a 20 minute at home work out. These easy steps will help you get into a routine of taking the time to care for your body's overall fitness.
LET'S BE HONEST THOUGH, how many people do you know that have their dream body from 20-minutes of exercise? We suggest 20-minutes because when you SHOW UP and start working out, 20-minutes will turn into 45. As we mention in our other articles, we focus on WINNING THE WEEK. That means lifting weights at least 4x a week. Start with 1-2 20-minute workouts, and watch them progress into 4x 60-minutes.
Eat Well
If you follow us on Instagram, you will see in my IG stories that I give simple tips of how to avoid calories. That may be swapping out french fries for salad, or cutting back alcohol during the week (I know, not fun, but a glass of wine has 120+ calories and a 16oz beer has over 150- it adds up!) The overall message being, if we make small changes to eat a bit better, our bodies and minds will reap the benefits. If you focus on eating 18/21 meals being primarily protein & veggies / fruit, your health and mindset will be significantly better.
At ShowUp Fitness we offer nutrition support so that you can not only cut out the foods that aren't the best for you, but also learn what your body needs. All of us are different and therefore need different meal plans and or diets, but we should never restrict ourselves so much that we cannot enjoy food. So eat well, but also give yourself a break and eat the cookie.
Disconnect / Unplugged (Read Brian Mackenzie & Dr. Andy Galpin HERE)
I am a big believer in blue light glasses at night so you do not compromise your ability to fall asleep. Other simple ways to disconnect is to add a limit on your social media and phone applications. You can do this by setting a limit on your phone or being aware and setting specific times that you can use or not use the technology. Some other ways to limit your technology use is to reserve the first hour of your day as “technology free.” Implementing any of these strategies or all three will help you disconnect and lower your overall technology use, therefore improving your quality of life and maybe your neck posture!
Go to Bed Early
When I say go to bed early, this can mean different times for different people. Everyone needs to aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night and to do this as well as make it to work on time you likely need to go to bed earlier than you think. To evaluate how early you need to hit the hay, time out your morning routine one day. After you do that, add a 30 minute buffer and then count back 8 hours. That is the time that you should be in bed and beginning to doze off.
